Laverna de Veer

Obituary of Laverna (Enns) Schartner de Veer

Laverna Enns was born at home in Rosenort, MB on August 25, 1935 to Henry and Mary Enns. She died peacefully on Christmas Day 2015 in Grande Prairie at 80 years of age.

Mom grew up on a farm helping her parents raise turkeys or doing fieldwork on a W-30 tractor. Mom gave her heart to God and was baptized on Dec. 19, 1948. She was faithful to her vows until the end. Mom took two years of teacher's college and got her teaching certificate. She taught 3 years in Manitoba, 1 year in Mexico, and then came to Alberta where she taught for 2 years on Indian Reserves, 3 years at Swalwell, Linden, Fort Vermilion and 5 years at Debolt. A notable trip Morn talked of was chartering a flight past the Arctic circle with her long-time friend Marlys Isaac on the longest day of the year.

Mom married Carl Schartner on July 13, 1973 in Linden, AB. They made their home in Crooked Creek, AB and to this union was born 2 girls and 1 boy. She was a steadying influence in our life and thoroughly enjoyed her children. Her heart was always in teaching and she tutored at school and at home, and did a lot of babysitting. Dad and Mom enjoyed traveling and they visited the Philippines where Mom had a girl she had sponsored for about 16 years. They also visited Brazil and Paraguay which were highlights in her life. She was diagnosed with cancer in 1988 and while undergoing treatment she prayed that God would let her live until her children were grown. He graciously answered her prayer and granted her 15 years cancer free. Her cancer came back and she had just finished another round of treatment when Dad passed away on August 26, 2005, the day after her 70th birthday. A year later, she fulfilled a dream and built a small house on her daughter's yard which she thoroughly enjoyed. We realized how lonely she still was when Herb de Veer asked for her hand in marriage and she accepted. They were married on September 2, 2011. She was diagnosed with leukemia just after they got married but God granted them four wonderful years of companionship together.

Mom had a strong personality which helped her conquer her battles. She was always interested in what her family was doing and was there for them when they needed her. She told us to get along with others because we wanted to be in heaven with them, She tried to keep her way clear and we want to join her in heaven.

We, as a family, want to thank the Ridgevalley Home staff for the years of wonderful care they gave Mom and the Cancer Clinic staff for all their patience! We also give the Points West Hospice staff a big thank you for their tender, loving care of us all as Mom was dying. You all made our load easier!
