Obituary of Rose Frieda Honecker

Please share a memory of Rose to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Rose Honecker was born in Kerrobert, SK to Paul and Lina (Schewe) Wenzel, shortly after their immigration from Germany. Starting a new life just at the beginning of the 1930’s drought and depression was very challenging.

From their farm near Luseland, SK, Rose and older sister Elizabeth travelled by horse 2 ½ miles across the Prairie to a one-room school. In addition to regular schoolwork, they had to learn English. Their brother Walter joined them later.

Farming alongside her dad, Rose was his right hand. She loved horses and learned to ride them and to drive a team of horses before she started school. Tractors gradually replaced horses, so Rose learned how to fix machinery.

During summer camp meetings at Denzel, SK, Rose understood the Gospel message and committed her life to the Lord Jesus Christ. She and her sister attended four years of Bible school near Nipawin, SK.

Rose married Walter Honecker August 1954. Together they committed to serve God. As missionaries in Germany, they held Bible clubs, served war refugees, and assisted with the Janz brothers in tent meetings. Their first son Theodore was born in Hamburg, Germany but he passed away at 5 ½ months. Later daughter Heidi was born.

Back in Canada, Walter was asked by Prairie Bible Institute to truck loads of lumber from their sawmill. Walter & Rose were part of Prairie staff from 1959 to 1989 as Walter stayed on to bring in supplies by truck and take choirs on tour by bus. Their home was always open to welcome students or missionaries who needed a meal or a place to stay. Lorne and Stephen were born there.

Once the family was grown, Rose started a new career: working with Home Care, Health Link, the Health Food Store, at the Golden Hills Lodge, and Senior’s Outreach. On community bus trips, with Walter driving and Rose taking care of passengers, they made a great team.

On January 17 2022, age 91, Rose passed into God’s presence, reunited with husband Walter, son Theo, her parents and many others.

Rose will be greatly missed by her family: children; Heidi (Bernie), Lorne (Pauline) and Steve (Dawn), grandchildren; Stephanie (Andy), Kristine (Brad), Jessica (Jonathan), Nikki, Jason (Robyn), Teri, Stacie and Heather (Aaron). She was Mama Rose to 9 greats: Caleb, Even, Angelina, Malaya, Guinevere, Charles, Lavinia, Felicity and James.

We look forward with hope to the day we will meet again.

Our deep appreciation goes to Dr. Ojomu, Dr. Savage, and the great team of staff who lovingly cared for Rose while she lived in Long-Term Care.

A private service was held January 22, 2022, Rose was laid to rest at the Three Hills Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
