Obituary of Herb Heidebrecht

Surrounded by his loving family, Herb Heidebrecht passed away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus at Westview Care Community in Linden, Alberta on December 29, 2021. Just over 80 years earlier in Linden, on August 22, 1941, Elizabeth and Peter Heidebrecht celebrated the birth of their son, Herbert Vernon.

At the age of five, Herb and his family moved to Coaldale, Alberta where he lived until he graduated from the Alberta Mennonite High School. Subsequently, he attended Bethany Bible Institute, the University of Lethbridge and the University of Calgary. Herb taught for three years in Trochu, Alberta, returned to the University of Calgary where he completed a Master of Education and then moved to Linden where he taught both High School and Elementary students until he retired in 1995.

It was while living in Calgary that Herb met Linda Koehn, the love of his life. They were married in Taber, Alberta on August 28, 1965. While living in Trochu, Herb and Linda had three boys, Timothy, Patrick and Travis. In 1971, the family moved to Linden. Herb spent these early years in Linden raising a young family, serving as a town councillor, coaching baseball and hockey and volunteering for the local ambulance service. After retirement Herb served also as a Kneehill School Board trustee.

Herb was deeply involved in the Linden MB church. In addition to attending services and care groups he served as a church deacon and Sunday School superintendent. He enjoyed singing in the men’s chorus. Herb also spent several summers working as the camp director at Camp Evergreen. For more than 25 years, he was involved in M2W2 prison ministries.

After living in town for seven years, the Heidebrecht family moved to what eventually became the Linden Tree Farm. Herb spent his remaining time on earth on the farm, continuing to teach for another 17 years as well as keeping bees and transforming the acreage into a thriving tree farm. Herb loved spending time outdoors, especially on the farm and with family in Waterton National Park. He adored being with his six grandchildren.

Herb’s physical health began to decline about a year before his passing. Although a definitive diagnosis remained elusive for much of this time, he was able to stay in his home, being loved and cared for by his wife Linda.

He leaves to mourn his passing, beloved wife Linda (nee Koehn), their sons Timothy (Bonnie), Patrick (Eleanor) and Travis (Wendy), and grandchildren Tony, Danica, Denon, Emma, Dylan and Aislinn, and three siblings, Rudy Heidebrecht, Harry Heidebrecht and Betty Hall. Herb was predeceased by his parents Peter and Elizabeth Heidebrecht, brothers Victor and John, and sisters Erica, Lillian, Anne and Hilda.

Memorial donations may be sent to Westview Care Community.
