Obituary of Les Bruck
Timothy Lester (“Les”) Bruck was born in Lloydminster, SK on an early-summer afternoon, June 26, 1954. He lived most of his life in Three Hills, Alberta, before passing away peacefully at age 67 from COVID-19 in Red Deer Regional Hospital during the evening of October 29, 2021.
Named in honor of his maternal uncle, Lester embraced his role as the only son of the Bruck family, sandwiched between his older sister, Gloria, and younger sister, Sylvia. As a boy, he loved tinkering with anything mechanical, and hanging around Grandpa Emil’s tool-making machine shop, learning skills that served him well all through his life.
While academics were not Les’ favorite activity growing up, he avidly learned in his own way. Self taught, he knew much about a large array of topics. Two of Lester’s high school years were spent in Tokyo, Japan where he made many friends at the ‘Christian Academy in Japan’ as well as in the Japanese community. He became well-known as the young handsome American that delivered newspapers from his Honda 350 motorbike.
Returning to Alberta, Les graduated from Prairie High School in 1972. He then began his diverse adventure of varying employment including farm hand, working at Pizza Hut, and truck driving. Lester was blessed with his Grandpa Strickert’s outgoing personality and entrepreneurial ability to sell just about anything. He excelled at sales ranging from cars, to Kirby vacuum cleaners, B2 Hammond organs, and Snap on Tools.
Lester relocated to Seattle Washington in 1974, where he met Susan Payne who was his parents’ secretary for the Japan Evangelical Mission. They were married in 1979 and were blessed with three amazing children, Trevor, Philip and Emily. He was so proud of his family.
In 1993, the Bruck’s returned to Three Hills where Lester began his well known Pro Door overhead garage door company, installing and servicing all types of overhead doors across central Alberta. His two sons will now proudly carry on Lester’s business of 28 years.
With his two sisters living overseas, Les assumed the role of next-door-neighbor and caregiver for his parents Don and Vivian Bruck. After Don’s death in 2017, Les lovingly continued to care for his mother, even after Vivian moved to Westview Care Community in April, 2021.
Lester was overjoyed with pride for his 4 grandchildren: Timmy, Seth, Abigail and Zoey, who all called him Pappy – nicknamed “Happy” by his young granddaughters. He loved life: hosting bonfires in his yard, traveling, vacationing at Lake Shuswap (MIRECA), doing crossword puzzles, playing cribbage, working with tools, the Seattle Seahawks, and Elvis.
Les will be deeply missed by his immediate and extended family, his large group of diverse friends around the world, and all those who interacted with him over his 67 years. We rejoice in the fact that he is “boot scoot and boogying” around the streets of Heaven. The sound of Lester’s joyful and contagious laugh will resonate in our hearts forever.
The Bruck family gives special thanks to the Three Hills Health Centre, Red Deer Hospital medical personnel who gave Lester their expert and tender-hearted care, to Three Hills Seniors Outreach, and to Sunset Funeral Services. Thank you all for your condolences and expressions of love during this very difficult time for all of us.
