Obituary of Nellie Barkman

Please share a memory of Nellie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Nellie Lena Barkman was born to Henry T. And Maria T. Enns at Rosenort, Manitoba, on July 25, 1926. God called her Home in the early morning of September 7, 2021, at the age of 95. We were blessed to be at her side, at her home, as she peacefully fell into the arms of Jesus.

She grew up in the Morris area taking her schooling at the Pleasant Valley School. At the age of 15 upon the confession of her faith, she was baptized, becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. In her younger years she enjoyed working with horses and tractors helping her Dad and her uncles Pete and Nick on their farms. Another highlight was living with her Aunt Mary in Winnipeg and working at St. Boniface Hospital.

In 1950, while working at the Morris Hospital, the flood came and she was evacuated and went to Alberta to live with relatives, and here she met our Dad. On April 22, 1951, she married our Dad, Claude Barkman of Swalwell, Alberta, at Rosenort, Manitoba by the late minister John Isaac. This union was blessed with 2 children.

They farmed at Swalwell. Dad took over the funeral service from his Dad, and Mom was his full partner in helping. Many of life-long friendships were gained through this.

Mom loved people. Coffee was always on and at mealtime there was always room at the table. Mom had many passions. She loved gardening, to knit, puzzle, read, flowers and meeting new friends.

When Dad passed away in 1990, it left a huge hole in our lives. She still loved working on the farm. The last year she drove the combine she was 80 years young. The last day we were combining that year we wanted her to go home after supper. And she said she was staying until we were done, which was at 7:00 the next morning, and she loved it. The next spring, she got a new knee and she said her combining days were over though she still enjoyed riding along every year.

In 1997 we bought a new holiday trailer and we told Mom we should try this Arizona thing. She got hooked and looked forward to going every year. We had the pleasure of taking her there for 22 years, meeting many, many new friends.

In 2004 we sold the farm at Swalwell and bought another farm 8 hours north at Peoria, Alberta. Mom loved this new adventure, making more new friends. Here she learned of a need at the Grande Prairie hospital for caps and she knit 1466 and a half caps for newborns, keeping this up until 3 weeks ago.

In 2017 Mom started a new chapter, moving with Marianne to Borden, Saskatchewan, making more new friends. She was excited when Peter and Karen sold the farm at Peoria, Alberta in the spring of 2019. They bought a farm at Borden and we were all together again.

Mom taught us to love Jesus and we are looking forward to meeting Mom and Dad in Heaven.

She leaves behind Marianne and Pete and Karen, 2 four-legged grand babies CeZar and Zoey, and extended family. She was Grandma Nellie to many. 2 brothers Bert and Vina Enns, of Linden, Alberta and Dennis Roy and Marg Enns of Hope BC, 2 brothers-in-law Allan Barkman of Linden, Alberta and Peter and Rose Dueck of Swanson, Saskatchewan and one sister-in-law Doris Barkman of Abbotsford, BC. Many nieces and nephews and lots of dear friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Claude in 1990, her Dad in February 1972, her mother in June 1972, 2 sisters Elma Goossen and Laverna de Veer.
