Obituary of Lydda Duerksen Regehr
Lydda Duerksen Regehr was born on February 28, 1931 at Swalwell, Alberta, to Abraham and Eva Schartner Duerksen. She peacefully passed away on December 19, 2020 at West View Care Community in Linden Alberta.
Mom grew up with six older and one younger sibling on the family farm in the Linden area. She attended the Antler school during her childhood years. Mom was 17 when she moved to Abbotsford, BC, with her parents and brother Dave and lived there for a couple years. When she was 19 she came back to Linden and worked at the Linden Nursing home and took up residence there.
At the age of 13, Mom gave her heart to Jesus and was baptized becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite. Her relationship with her Savior was very precious to her and she loved to share His love with others. She was a woman that embraced the power of prayer. She cared deeply for people and had a warm and accepting heart. Her faith was a witness in deed and action to a life in Christ Jesus.
On June 24, 1951, mom married her childhood sweetheart Walter Regehr and they enjoyed life together for nearly 70 years. Their marriage was blessed with six children. A few years after folks were married, Mom and her sister-in-law Linda started what they called “Tot’s Wear” in the corner of Walt’s Electric. This small beginning turned into “The Fabric Shop” that Aunt Linda and Mom operated for 25 years. She enjoyed giving sewing lessons to young girls and whoever wanted to learn to sew. Mom loved gardening, her flowers, and expressing herself with her paintbrush on a fresh canvas. When the volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Service began, Mom would help with answering the phone and dispatching.
Mom and “Aunt Margaret” (as us children called her) Penner Toews shared a very close friendship and a love for poetry and singing. Together they wrote songs that bless us to this day. Singing was very much a part of our family. We would often sing at home and while traveling in the car. Even in her last years when her mind wasn’t completely clear she could still sing almost any song by memory.
Mom loved to travel as much as Dad, and they had many special memories of their travels. In 1998, Mom and Dad traveled to the Ukraine to find the home where her Dad and his family lived before the Russian Revolution forced them from their home. This was where her Dad’s family owned and operated a milling business with the old-fashioned windmill of that era. For 24 years they traveled to Goltry, Oklahoma, for the winters to live close to their daughter Benita and family. They felt embraced by the congregation and community and it became their second home.
We want to thank Westview Care Community for their loving care of mom. We as children recognize and honor our Dad’s devoted care and how he faithfully stood by Mom in the last years of her life.
Left to cherish precious memories are her loving husband Walt; Dorothy and Clayton Unruh, Bonners Ferry, Idaho; Rawlyn Thiessen, Chilliwack, BC; Lyle and Karen Regehr, Pincher Creek, AB; Benita and Dean Reimer, Goltry, OK; Connie Regehr and Cordell Cull, Okotoks, AB; Don and Katie Regehr, Linden, AB; 30 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren. Her brother Dave and Dorothy Duerksen, her sister Agnes Toews, sisters- in-law Eva Regehr, Linda Regehr, Josie Regehr and Anne Baerg.
Mom has left us to join her parents, parents-in-law, daughter Marilyn, grandson Kenton, and numerous family members.
