Mathilda Wohlgemuth

Obituary of Mathilda Wohlgemuth

Matilda Unger Wohlgemuth was born on August 22, 1929 in Prairie Rose, Manitoba, to Abram and Katie Wiebe Unger. She peacefully passed away with her family gathered around her on April 16, 2019 after patiently enduring the effects of leukemia.

Mom spent a happy childhood in the Ste. Anne, Manitoba area with her 7 siblings. At the age of 16 she accepted the Lord and was baptised into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite and embraced this faith to the end. She was married to David Wohlgemuth on September 17, 1950 by his grandfather Min Cornelius Wohlgemuth. They moved around for employment for several years eventually settling on a homestead in Crooked Creek, Alberta. They had a family of 6 boys and 6 girls with the oldest girl passing away in infancy.

Mom had a quiet, reserved and cheerful nature. She accepted people the way they were and taught us to not judge others by their culture or ways they differed from us. She worked hard together with Dad to provide and teach us the ethics of work and caring. We fondly remember story time with Mom, both reading books, and also telling of her childhood memories.

She grieved deeply for her son who passed away in 2004. After 66 years of marriage our dad passed away in 2017 leaving Mom very lonely. Despite that she enjoyed life and spent many hours in prayer for her family and others. Reading and knitting were a large part of her life. She understood clearly and was sad when her daughter lost her husband only a month before her passing.

She leaves many memories with her children, Lois Colberg, Rimbey, AB; Kathy and Harold Isaac, Lee and Janet, Crooked Creek, AB; Brenda and Delmar Schartner, Heart Valley, AB; Rob and Monica, Crooked Creek, AB; Donna and Tim Schweigert, Chilliwack, B.C.; Jim and Cheryl, Grande Prairie, AB; Tim and Colleen, Crooked Creek, AB; Glen, Hythe, AB; Tami and Jerry Thiessen, Telkwa, B.C.; daughters-in-law Fern Wohlgemuth and Carmi Hill; grandchildren and great grandchildren, one great, great grandson; one brother Bill and Laverna; sisters-in-law, Frances and Eva and many other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Sandra; son, John; husband, David; son-in-law, Reg Colberg; grandsons, Adrian Schartner and Corey Friesen and most of her siblings.

A special thank you to Kathy for caring for Mom, and to the nurses at Points West Hospice.
