Obituary of Eva Annette Toews

Our Mother, Gramma, and wife Eva Annette Thiessen Toews was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, January 4th, 1943.  She passed away in the presence of her family at the Mazankowski Heart Institue ICU, in Edmonton, AB, about noon on February 22, 2019.

Eva was the third child of the family of five children raised by George and Minnie Thiessen.  She grew up in Crooked Creek on her Dad's original homestead.  Mom enjoyed her childhood on the farm.  She talked fondly of feeding the barn cats by squirting milk into their mouths when milking.

Mom was converted and baptized in her early teens and enjoyed her walk with God.

Dad was led to ask Mom to go for a ride in his pickup with him before she graduated from High School.  After they completed their respective education requirements, Dad requested mom's hand in marriage and they exchanged their vows on August 13, 1961.  In the early years they resided in a small house in Ridgevalley for the summer.  They worked in the sawmill bush camp for the winter.

Mom loved family trips to Enderby to visit Grampa Thiessens and driving through the mountains.  It was very important to her that we stopped by roadside picnic tables and ate the homemade lunches she packed in Dad's empty parts boxes from the shop.

Mom and Dad led by example, opening the house to all who ventured close.  Mom enjoyed cooking and caring for Dad, her six children, and many from the community, including those "fixing" in the repair shop.  Mom planted a large garden every year and required everyone to weed their rows.  She made sure everyone was fed, because "you have to have a little lunch".  Mom spearheaded the Schartner cookbook.  Memories of her include homemade mustard, cherry braid, horseradish, and "pluma mousse".

Mom glowed when the grandchildren were around.  She love to spoil her "dollies" with candy, chocolates, freezies, or any snack on hand at the time.

In the last few years Dad and Mom lived by themselves on the place where her grandparents once lived.  Folks were still quite independent, going to Grande Prairie several times a week for appointments and shop supplies, but really to go out for lunch. . .

We, as a family, would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Mazankowski Heart Institute for their exceptional care and support she received during her extended stay after open heart surgery.  A special thank you to the Edmonton Guest house and the staff, caring for Dad and our family when we would come and go, hosting us in the time we needed after her passing.

Mom will be missed and lovingly remembered by Willard, her husband of 57 years, six children: Lois, Bow Island, AB;  Mike, Linden, AB;  Laurie and Randel Wiebe, Linden, AB;  Merv and Sharon, Crooked Creek, AB;  Lorraine and Tim Schafer, Dalhart, TX;  Matt and Kendra, Crooked Creek, AB;  and eleven grandchildren:  Megan, Bethany, Peggy, Samantha, Stacey, Jamie, Mandy, Zachary, Elizabeth, Sally, and William;  brothers: Lorne and Josie, Crooked Creek, AB;  Percy and Eunice, Armstrong, BC;  sister Pam and Jake Barkman, Abbotsford, BC and sister-in-law Lena, Crooked Creek, AB.

Eva was predeceased by her parents, her parents-in-law, one brother, two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
