Obituary of Frieda Hopcraft

Forever in our hearts - Frieda Hopcraft - Frieda was born Dec. 2, 1923 in Ste. Anne, MB to Henry G. and Anna Toews. She was the second of six children. In 1928 when she was four years old, her parents moved to Alberta. They settled on a farm one mile east of Sunnyslope. She had an older sister Alvina and a younger brother Walter. She attended the Sunnyslope School from grade one through to grade eleven. They had a good church and Sunday school. The Mennonite Brethren came from Didsbury and held church services. Two more sisters, Mariam and Dorothy and a brother Leonard were born in Alberta. In 1941 she finished high school and went to Calgary to work. She met a young soldier Gerald Hopcraft and they were married Feb. 14, 1942. In April, Gerald went overseas and served in the army for three and a half years during World War II. While he was away she moved back home and did various odd jobs. Gerald returned from the war in the fall of 1945 and went farming. They lived on a farm two miles from Linden. They had three children, Keith born April 5, 1947, Dianne May 11, 1949 and Arvin Oct. 18, 1952. Tragically, their daughter Dianne was born with a defective heart and passed away Sept. 28, 1953. In 1950, they moved to Leduc where Gerry worked in the oilfield until 1958 when they moved to Acme. They bought a house on Clarke Street and lived there until 1995. Gerry got a job at Linden Machine Works and took his training for a welder. He retired in 1978 due to cancer and passed away April 29, 1990. Frieda worked at various jobs, some housecleaning and worked in Swen’s generl store until 1967 when she started working for Stephen Cline at the Veterinary Clinic. She worked there 26 years, retiring in 1993. In 1995, she moved into the Linden Lodge. Due to increased immobility, in September 2008 she moved into the Linden Nursing Home. Frieda is pre-deceased by her parents, Henry G. and Anna Toews, her daughter Dianne, her husband Gerald, her son Keith, her brothers Leonard and Walter H. Toews, her sisters Marion Duer and Alvina Holmstrom and brother-in-law Joe Duer. She is survived by her son Arvin (Sharon), daughter-in-law Susan (Everett) Page, her sister Dorothy (Walter) Unger, sisters-in-law Katie and Betty Toews, her four grandchildren, Diane (Bob) Hippard, Gene (Dusty) Hopcraft, Shane Doyle and Shaun (Kim) Hopcraft; and 7 great-grandchildren, William, Joseph Reid, Rylan, Rose and Ruby Hippard, Allen (Nicole) and Brittany Hopcraft. The family would like to thank the staff of the Westview Care Community for the care, love and support of Frieda. They truly went above and beyond their call of duty in caring for her. Words cannot express our sincere and deep appreciation for all that they have done. A Celebration of Life was held Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015 at the M.B. Church in Linden.
