Phyllis passed away peacefully on September 3, 2017 at the age of 97 years in the Red Deer Hospital. She was born on December 20, 1919 at Vegreville, AB. the only child of John and Olive Gordon of Innisfree, AB.  They owned and operated the Grandview Cattle Ranch.  After graduating from the University of Alberta in 1940, and the College of Education in 1941, Phyllis taught school at Carstairs, AB, until she contracted rheumatic fever. After a year of recovery, she was employed at the Correspondence School Branch and also at the Meteorological Office in Edmonton. In 1947, she married Murray Steinbach, and moved to Trochu, AB. Here they raised three sons John, Gordon, Donald and a daughter, Joan.

Phyllis was very active in her community starting as a Cub Leader for 8 years, a 55 year member of the Catholic Women’s League since 1959, a Life Member of the Order of the Royal Purple and the St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary. She was involved in the Drop-in Centre and the Trochu Historical Society with the production of the Trochu History Book “ Remember When”  Book #1, which was published in 1975. In her earlier years, Phyllis enjoyed cross-country skiing and later in her 80’s, bowling kept her in good shape. She was a real sports fan and loved watching her sons play baseball with the Cardinals and hockey with the Arenas, and her daughter play volleyball, basketball and equestrian. Phyllis loved the Edmonton Oilers and #99 was her favorite, but she also liked the New Kid #97, because of his number!!  On Mother’s Day 1959,  Phyllis and Murray bought a cabin in Sylvan Lake, and they enjoyed many summers at the lake, and the “Owl’s Nest “ is still in the family.

Phyllis is survived by her three sons, John (Lawrie) of Red Deer, Gord (Valerie) of Sylvan Lake, Don (Faye) of Sherwood Park, and her daughter, Joan Steinbach-Ensor (Ted) of Nordegg. Her grandchildren are: Matthew (Marta) Steinbach, Lindsay Steinbach, Paula (Roald) Steinbach, Erica (John) Christie, Sarah (Joel) Sinkwich, Erin (Perry) Wildeboer, Kristofer (Angela) Steinbach, Julie (James) Cadman, Branden Cadman and Gregory Cadman; great grandchildren, Paisley and Shelby Wildeboer; Oliver, Charlie and Hazel Christie; Morgan Steinbach-Smith and Braylon Steinbach, and Evie Sinkwich, and several nieces and nephews.
